ACT Junior Championships

by admin on July 10, 2017

In weather that not even ducks would be comfortable, our intrepid juniors recently took part in a week of social and serious bowls at Belconnen Bowls Club.
The morning of day one was spent at a clinic run by BA RBM James Berriman in conjunction with Bowls ACT junior coaches Bob and Marg Bacchetto.  17 juniors learnt tips and techniques in a fun filled environment.  The afternoon saw a Jack Attack competition where parents, friends and juniors competed in a semi-serious tournament.
Day saw the start of the Junior Championship proper with the girls’ singles and boys’ pairs being held.  Tuggeranong’s Mackenzie Smith was the overall winner besting Chloe Cooper from Belconnen by a whisker!
The Boys pairs champions were the experienced pair of Logan O’Shaughnessy (Yowani) and Ethan Heffron (Belconnen).  Runners up were the virtual newcomers to the game Pat Macfarlane (Yass) and Harvey McAllister from Queanbeyan.
The Boys singles event was a hotly contested affair that came down to a nail biting match between Jarod Edwards from (Bungendore) and Logan O’Shaughnessy.  Logan was able to repeat his 2015 result taking out the championship in miserable conditions.
Last but not least, the mixed fours played a round robin event resulting in Ethan, Logan, Pat and Ben Fahey (Yass) being declared winners over the Edwards siblings from Bungendore, Brock, Jarod & Telara with Liam Walsh from QRSLM.
Bowls ACT would like to sincerely thank James Berriman and Bowls Australia, the Belconnen Bowls Club for the greens, umpires and hospitality, and the parents that supported the event!
