Champions All!
I’m sure the lads from Yass won’t be too offended when I say that most of us did not expect to see them in the finals of the Men’s C of CC Fours last weekend, let alone on the winners podium! Yass defeated the Belconnen champion team on an extra end to finish 20-18 up. The Yass team, of Jamie Dunn, filling in for Andrew Bush, Phil Murphy, Beau Dunley and Barry Bush knocked off the Canberra North team – hot off their win over Tuggeranong – (23-13) and then host team QRSLM before meeting Belconnen. Belconnen (Bruce Hancock, Michael Bice, Shane Murton and Adam Jeffery) met ‘arch rivals’ Weston Creek in their first match coming away winners 26-18; and then going on to claim the Canberra BC scalps 26-14.
In the women’s event, Canberra BC continued on their sensational record of recent times by defeating Tuggeranong 20-14. Canberra’s team of Gill Stenner, Pam Bishop, Gayle Young and Julie Hancock were just too consistent for the Tuggeranong team Kath Potter, ACT Junior Mackenzie Smith, Ingrid Griffiths and Veteran Pat Hamilton. Tuggeranong made their final after winning a very close one against Yowani 17-16 and defeating QRSLM 23-16, whereas Canberra had to overcome the ladies from Queanbeyan 27-10 (who themselves had shown glimpses of brilliance against Weston Creek in the earlier match) and Canberra North 26-18.
Both the Men’s and Women’s finals were played in fabulous conditions at QRSLM with all teams acquitting themselves like the champions they are. Will done to all involved! The Men’s and Women’s C of CC Triples were also recently conducted out at Tuggeranong. Winners of the Men’s event were QRSLMs Nathan Savino, Joel McInnes and Mark Ebsworth who defeated Tuggeranong trio Sean Allen, George Gibson and Joe Zimoch – George and Joe being the ‘bridesmaids’ again having been defeated the previous week in the final of the Men’s 60+ Pairs! QRSLM defeated Canberra North and Goulburn (forfeit) and Belconnen en route whereas Tuggeranong had to conquer Yowani, Canberra and City on their trek to the final.
The Women’s event saw Weston Creek (Paige Dowsett, Margaret Bacchetto and Sharon Harmer) dominate over
Canberra (Gill Stenner, Pam Bishop and Julie Hancock) – defeating them 28-19. The Creekers defeated City and Tuggeranong to make the final whereas Canberra met (and defeated!) QRSLM and Canberra North.
A variety of photos attached – with apologies to the Tuggeranong women’s CC fours runners up – photo has not come through yet!
