Indoor Qualifiers Decided
The ACT representatives to play in the Australian Indoor Championships at Tweed Heads in August have been decided after a tough weekend of competition. Played for the first time on the synthetic surface at Canberra Bowling Club, the number of entries was pleasingly high.
In the Men’s event, Mac McLean from WC defeated Canberra BC’s Alex Tonkin. This game was a superb demonstration of skill with both players putting down exceptional bowls. This win provides Mac with the opportunity that has up until now eluded him – somewhat surprisingly, since he seems to be perpetually on the winners podium. The whole f the ACT knows you’ll do us proud, Mac!. To earn his spot in the final, Mac defeated ACT rep team mate Peter Watts (Belc) in the semi-final, whereas Alex eventually won a marathon match against Jamie Freeman (Belc) to score his berth.
In the Women’s event, Chloe Morrison from Tuggeranong added to her State Singles title by defeating Gayle Young in the final; Gayle becoming Canberra’s second finalist in their maiden event. Gayle defeated the Creek’s Sharon Steele in one semi whereas Chloe defeated Queanbeyan’s Mandy Stitt in the other.
Bowls ACT thanks The Canberra Bowling Club for their assistance in hosting this event – in particular for providing markers, umpires and their usual fabulous BBQ lunch!
