Round 10 Pennant Wrap
With Grades 1, 5 and the women having completed their rounds, it was the middle grades that held the spot light this weekend.
Grade 2 –Belconnen’s 3 rink win ensured they retained the number one position and a home semi and preliminary final series. All three rink wins were good ones, with John Maggs’s + 12 being the best of the lot. David Gallagher’s rink win enabled him to snatch the top spot on the skips ladder from Tuggeranong’s David Pruss (equal on points but with the better shots difference). Third was Norm Stewart (WC) and Fourth Neil Craven (QRSLM). Final Score Bel 64, Tug 39 (3-0). Canberra North raised a few eyebrows (well, mine, anyway!) when they defeated QRSLM on all rinks. Pollock’s rink must have been on fire, winning their rink by 25 shots! Final Score CN 75, QRSLM 45 (3-0). Queanbeyan had a disappointing season end with a fairly substantial loss to WC. Jeff Bradley’s rink posted a +26 shot win and Norm Stewart’s rink also had a nice win. Kevin Pearson ‘s rink win contributed Queanbeyan’s 2 points. Final Score Qbn 45, WC 78 (1-2). Final Placing s: Bel 79, WC 76, QRSLM 59, Tugg 55.
Grade 3 – Goulburn stormed into the minor premiership (and therefore their first home final series!) with a huge 3 rink win over Yass. Hayden Ward’s rink was again the best performed of the day with a +14. Fellow skip John Ensby has finished the rounds on top of the skips ladder with a perfect record, followed closely by Ward, then Jason Rath from Yass. Final Score Goulburn 63, Yass 43 (3-0). Tuggeranong leap frogged Yowani into the final four when they defeated Canberra on all rinks. Two rinks were close but Alan Naughton’s +11 shot win put the result beyond doubt. Final Score Tugg 66, Can 48 (3-0) Yowani would have been disappointed to finish their season off with a loss to Weston Creek, again on all three rinks. The Flynn O’Shaughnessy (Y) / Peter Roach (WC) rink was a high scoring but close result. Jay Cullen’s rink had the best overall result. Final Score Yowani 54, WC 66 (0-3). Final Placings: Goulburn 98, Yass 71, WC 60, Tugg 50.
Grade 4 – Tuggeranong earned their minor premiers status when they defeated WC on two rinks. The rinks skipped by Garry Goodman and Baden Clark had good wins (+9 & +13) whereas Mick Thornton’s rink was the winning one for the Creek. Final Score Tugg 66, WC 46 (2-1). Belconnen picked up a handy 10 points when they defeated the higher placed QRSLM on 2 rinks. Despite Stephen Young’s rink win, he dropped out of first position on the skips ladder to Queanbeyan’s David Van Reesch (equal on points, but with a lesser shots difference). Next on the skips ladder, again equal on points but with a smaller shots diff is Darryl Peters (Qbn), followed by Garry Goodman (T). Final Score Bel 61, QRSLM 51 (2-1). As eluded, David Van Reesch’s rink had a big rink win when Queanbeyan played Canberra North, defeating them on 2 rinks. Peter Totterdell’s rink was responsible for Norths’ two points. Final Score CN 59, Qbn 65 (1-2) Final Placings Tugg 75, Qbn 66, QRSLM 65, Bel 57.
