Pairs and Triples Champions

by Bowls ACT on July 24, 2019

The ACT Pairs and Triples Champions have been determined for 2019.

In the Men’s Pairs, played at Belconnen, it was an all Weston Creek final with Jeff Bradley and Vince Haggar taking on club mates David Croker and Ivan Peric. It was a close game, played in chilly conditions with Bradley’s team the victor 19-17. Although Bradley is no stranger to taking out ACT Championships, for Haggar it was his first time on the winners podium!

In the Women’s Pairs, played at QRSLM, it was a back to back win for Belconnen duo Nicole Mengel and Jill Cornish. Cornish and Mengel defeated regular finalists from Weston Creek Sharon Harmer and Marg Bacchetto in a match that appeared to be in the bag for the Creekers early on. However, the Belco pair fought back, eventually taking the match 23-18.

In the Women’s Triples, again played at QRSLM, it was another back to back win – this time for the women from Canberra BC. The highly experienced team of Mina Bannerman, Lois Waters and Gayle Young held off ACT Pairs winners Mengel and Cornish together with Joan Tounce. The match could have gone either way but at the last end, it was Canberra 20, Belconnen 19.

The Men’s Triples championships were decided over at Tuggeranong when Belconnen defeated Goulburn Railway. In conditions that were more suitable for polar bears…..the gents from Goulburn Railway were appearing in their first ACT final and the match drew a hardy group of spectators. Alas, Goulburn’s Hayden Ward, Keith Gray and Phil Greenhalgh could not keep up the frenetic pace they set earlier, going down to Belconnen’s Peter Watts, Darren Fitzpatrick and Rod Tonkins 30-18.
