Meet the Players – Part 5

by Bowls ACT on September 26, 2023

In the lead-up to The Nationals Bowls ACT will be taking a look at our representative players, with thanks to representative partners Westcoast Bowls – Use CODE BACT23

Team Smith – Mens Open

Some regions best and brightest talents converge to create a highly competitive team out to take it to the big guns!

The experienced super-lead Garry Charker will play up-front here and should have a decent idea of conditions being a part of the senior squad who play in advance of the open sides. Canberra Bowling Clubs ‘Chucky’ has had back to back stellar seasons culminating in his invitational singles triumph recently over Doug Farr.

Queanbeyan Bowls Club has two members of this team with Will Russell a new member of the open squad and looking to continue on a season in which he has achieved plenty, highlighted by an ACT Triples title with fellow ACT rep Glenn Morton.

Russells Queanbeyan clubmate Sean ‘Sheepy’ Robertson will play third and has the class to be a real contributor for this team, Sheepy claiming the 2022 ACT Pairs alongside Jamie Reynolds.

Canberra Bowling Club provide one of their top guns here with former Queenslander Jamie Smith skipping this impressive rink. Jamie boasts a distinguished record in the ACT and in Queensland and will be ready to do damage with this quality crew, as he did last year when knocking off none less than the NSW rink of Aaron Wilson.

Team Young – Over 60’s Women

Consistent success has brought these four together with all members having enviable records. The two Queanbeyan Clubs will be putting their rivalry on hold briefly while they chase national success!

Catherine Hunt & Sue Lalor are the Queanbeyan RSL representatives, both of whom have won more games than most of us have had hot dinners as well as plenty of representative games as both open & senior representatives.

Queanbeyan Bowls Club provides Mandy Stitt & Gayle Young to the team with both players having a suite of titles in their careers, though none more impressive than Youngs 2022 Mixed Pairs Gold alongside Matt Styles, the former cartographer knows her way around a bowling green and will look to guide this team to success in 2023!
